Cancún, Quintana Roo — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa launched the international HYROX 2026 competition, which is being held outdoors for the first time at Malecón Tajamar, solidifying Cancún as a key destination for high-level sports tourism.

The event runs from March 13 to 15 and brings together more than 10,000 athletes from over 20 Mexican states and at least 16 countries, including Canada, the United States, and several European nations. Organizers also expect more than 30,000 visitors, including companions, coaches, and the general public.

During her participation, the governor highlighted the importance of such international competitions to strengthen Quintana Roo’s profile in sports and tourism while promoting healthy lifestyles and physical activity.

An Event with Rapid Global Growth

HYROX began in 2017 in Hamburg, Germany, and is now considered one of the world’s fastest-growing fitness racing events, with competitions in multiple international cities.

The challenge consists of a circuit combining endurance and strength, where participants must complete 8 kilometers of running, divided into one-kilometer blocks, interspersed with eight functional exercise stations. These include SkiErg, sled push and pull, rowing ergometer, burpees, Farmer’s Carry, lunges with a sandbag, and medicine ball throws.

Athletes aim to complete the course in the shortest time possible, testing their cardiovascular capacity, muscular strength, and strategy.

Specialized Infrastructure

The Cancún edition stands out for being held outdoors, with specialized infrastructure and tented areas to ensure sun protection, safety, and optimal conditions for athletes, staff, and attendees.

Sports activities take place in two time blocks, from 6:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., allowing for better logistical organization and suitable weather conditions for competitors.

With this event, Cancún strengthens its position as a strategic venue for international competitions, boosting sports tourism and expanding its high-impact event offerings.
