Cancún, Quintana Roo — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa delivered new homes in the Paraíso Maya and Arcos Paraíso subdivisions in Cancún, accompanied by the general director of INFONAVIT, Octavio Romero Oropeza. The event benefited residents of Cancún who had been selected by the Welfare Housing program to receive their homes.
These homes are part of the federal Welfare Housing program, a strategy that aims to assist families with lower incomes and guarantee them a safe, accessible, and quality home.
“An Act of Solidarity and Transformation”: Mara Lezama
Before beneficiaries who received the keys to their new homes, Mara Lezama emphasized that these actions represent “empathy, solidarity, and a government that works for the people.”
The governor noted that thousands of people had remained invisible for years, despite contributing to the growth of Quintana Roo. Therefore, the delivery of these homes marks progress in building a more equitable state.
She even recounted cases like that of Isabel, a beneficiary who managed to consolidate her dream of homeownership in just five days, thanks to INFONAVIT’s new agile process: “Behind each deed there is a story of hope,” she stated.
Additionally, she highlighted that access to one’s own home helps build peace, as it provides stability to those who previously paid rent, faced eviction risks, or lived overcrowded with relatives.
Quintana Roo, National Leader in Housing Delivery
During his intervention, Octavio Romero Oropeza reported that Quintana Roo is currently the state with the highest delivery of INFONAVIT housing in the country, thanks to joint work with the State Government and municipalities.
Originally, the program contemplated 10,000 homes during the six-year term, each with two bedrooms, a full bathroom, and living room, dining room, and kitchen areas. However, through agreements promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum, the average price was reduced from 1.2 million pesos to 600,000 pesos, making them accessible to low-income workers.
Among the measures that allowed this reduction are:
- Access to land without cost for urbanization
- Elimination of permits and fees that increased construction costs
- Increase in contributions derived from the minimum wage increase
- Simplification of requirements (from 30 to only 3: being a beneficiary, earning between 1 and 2 minimum wages, and not owning a home)
The INFONAVIT director also announced that, thanks to state management, the goal grew to 64,000 homes, of which nearly 15,000 are already signed, and it is expected to close the year with 30,000.
More Quintana Roo Families Access a Home
During the tour of the delivered homes—125 in Paraíso Maya and the first 4 of the 100 planned in Arcos Paraíso—authorities and beneficiaries verified the quality of the new homes.
Among those who received their homes are single mothers and fathers, young people with few years of contributions, and workers who waited up to a decade to achieve this goal.
