Cancún, Quintana Roo — A free public transport program called Ruta Mar is giving more residents access to Cancún’s beaches, allowing families to enjoy the Caribbean Sea safely and at no cost.
The initiative, launched by municipal president Ana Paty Peralta, has seen high participation from families who use the buses on weekends to reach the Hotel Zone. The service promotes community interaction and use of public spaces.
Starting at 10 a.m., residents can board white buses marked with the program logo at stations near their homes, primarily in the eastern and northern parts of the city. The buses travel to beaches including Las Perlas, Langosta, Tortugas, and Gaviota Azul, also known as Forum.
After beach visits, the buses pick up passengers at the same points along Kukulcán Boulevard to return them to two established route bases: El Torito, Multiplaza Villas, and Rehoyada; and Tres Reyes, Paseos Kusamil, Bodega Aurrera, Tierra Maya, and Villas Otoch Paraíso.
The program has enabled people who previously couldn’t afford transportation to the Hotel Zone to now have direct and dignified access to beaches, strengthening social tourism and inclusion at one of the destination’s main natural attractions.
