Chicxulub Puerto, Yucatan — Four young people, including several minors, were detained by residents of Chicxulub Puerto on Sunday night after being accused of throwing eggs at homes and allegedly injuring a girl while riding all-terrain vehicles through the area.
The incident prompted a response from municipal police and the parents of those involved.
The events took place in the condominium area of the port, where neighbors called authorities after intercepting the youths for alleged acts of vandalism.
According to residents, in addition to the egg-throwing, a minor was injured as the ATVs passed by.
Witnesses said the youths tried to avoid police intervention by offering money to the neighbors to let them leave. However, the residents refused and remained at the scene until municipal police arrived.
The parents of the teenagers also came to the site and held a dialogue with the neighbors to address their grievances and find a solution, as several of those accused were under 18. After the conversation, both sides reached an agreement to end the incident.
As part of the agreement, residents announced the creation of a neighborhood watch group to coordinate a response if similar incidents occur during the vacation season.
Neighbors noted that the so-called “eggings” tend to recur every summer, carried out by some visitors or temporary residents who consider the practice a tradition. However, the community of Chicxulub Puerto says these acts damage homes, disturb the peace, and harm coexistence in the port.
