Mahahual, Quintana Roo — Four cruise ships canceled their arrivals at the Costa Maya pier in Mahahual this week, citing adverse weather conditions from Cold Front 37, according to local service providers.
The affected vessels are the Explorer of the Seas, Icon of the Seas, Grandeur of the Seas, and Seven Seas Grandeur. Their cancellations meant approximately 12,000 passengers did not disembark in the coastal town.
Service providers confirmed the official reason was weather-related. “The argument was the climatological conditions,” one provider said, while expressing hope the cancellations were not linked to recent security concerns. “Hopefully it’s not because of what happened with the narcos, the insecurity that sometimes occurs here; that scares tourism and hurts us a lot, because afterwards they don’t want to come.”
The cancellations came despite the U.S. government removing Quintana Roo from its travel alert list on Monday. The alert had been issued Sunday following violent incidents in Jalisco related to a military operation that resulted in the death of CJNG cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho.”
Providers noted that tourist traffic has seen a notable decrease over the past two months following the end of the December holiday season, which they described as normal. They expressed confidence that arrivals would normalize with improving weather and that the situation would pick up during the upcoming Easter holiday period.
