Mexican driver Sergio ‘Checo’ Pérez has an open door to compete in Formula E, according to the electric racing series’ cofounder Alberto Longo.
While not venturing to say whether he sees it as possible that at some point in his career Pérez might say yes to competing in the electric circuit, Longo hasn’t lost hope of seeing the Mexican driver in one of the single-seaters of the category that has experienced the greatest growth internationally since its creation more than 12 years ago.
Looking ahead to what will be the Mexico City E-Prix on January 10, 2026, Longo reiterated that ‘Checo’ will always have the door open to compete in this category, although he clearly sees it as an almost impossible dream, given the new adventure the Mexican will experience in the coming months with his return to Formula 1 with Cadillac.
“I wouldn’t dare give ‘Checo’ Pérez any advice. At Cadillac, it appears he’s joining a young but vibrant team, with lots of desire, and they will surely be a rival to keep in mind, but starting something from scratch in Formula 1 is complex and they will need time for the team to gain experience and for the budget to have its effect,” Longo stated.
Seeing Him in Formula E Seems Like a Dream
Longo understands that the Mexican with a competitive car can always fight at the front of any grid, but he understands that seeing him in Formula E today seems more like a dream and prefers to cultivate the good friendship he has with him and his family, who were present at the 2025 edition during the series’ last visit to Mexico.
After becoming accustomed in recent years to being the championship with the greatest audience growth worldwide, recording double-digit increases each season, during the 2024-2025 campaign they had a total of 561 million viewers and a 14 percent increase compared to the previous season, of which Mexico contributes practically eight million. “If we repeat that 10-12 percent growth, we’re talking about having already surpassed eight million fans in Mexico.”
“Eleven years ago there were only 600 million motor sports fans and today there are 800 million. We like to think we have some responsibility in that increase, but we still want to increase this margin and convince more people to consume motor sports,” he added.
Formula E Data in Mexico
In 2026 it will be the last edition that runs with the generation 3 cars, which will undergo a change until the 2026-2027 campaign.
Formula E is still negotiating with Mexico City authorities to consider a multi-year renewal, but that will only come if the capital government invests more in this competition.
Jake Dennis of Andretti won the first race of the season in Sao Paulo (Brazil), at the start of the 12th campaign of the electric series worldwide.
