Ex-governor demands 602M pesos for revoked ferry concession

Former Quintana Roo Governor Roberto Borge

Cancún, January 18. From prison, former Quintana Roo governor Roberto Borge has initiated a legal process to claim 602 million pesos in compensation from the Secretariat of the Navy. The claim is for the revocation of the concession granted to the company Impulsora Marítima de Quintana Roo y del Caribe, commercially known as Barcos Caribe, which operated the Playa del Carmen to Cozumel route.

The company, historically linked to frontmen for the former governor, lost its operating permit in 2018. This measure was taken by federal authorities following the explosion of one of its vessels at the Playa del Carmen dock, an incident that left people injured and exposed serious flaws in the company’s safety protocols.

Currently, the legal representatives of the commercial entity have requested the Federal Court of Administrative Justice to compensate them for damages resulting from the annulment of said concession.

The claim has generated various criticisms, given that Roberto Borge faces criminal proceedings for embezzlement and illicit enrichment, crimes allegedly committed during his state administration.

It will be up to the federal magistrates to analyze the validity of this financial demand and determine whether the multi-million peso payment to a company flagged for irregularities should proceed.

Meanwhile, the case reignites the controversy over the businesses and concessions granted during his term, which remain under the scrutiny of Mexican justice.
