International Trans Visibility Day, which falls on March 31st each year, was celebrated with the "Footprints of Transcendence" event. This event served as a platform for dialogue, reflection, and celebration for the trans community and the wider public in Solidaridad. Participants left their mark on a mural located at the COMUMU premises.
Mayín Mejía Ku, the head of the Municipal Women's Committee (COMUMU), explained that the event aimed to foster inclusion, visibility, and respect for the rights of trans individuals. It also sought to raise awareness about the unique challenges and realities faced by the trans community. The goal was to create safe spaces for free expression.
Mejía Ku added that the mayor, José Luis Chacón Méndez, has entrusted her with the task of promoting inclusive public policies and ensuring respect for human rights for all, regardless of gender identity. This event is a testament to the administration's commitment to diversity and equality. Aurora de Jesús Miranda, a municipal delegate from the Secretary of Women, shared the story of Kenia Cuevas, a trans woman who has faced suffering, violence, and discrimination, but now advocates for the rights of the trans community and works to prevent transfemicide.
Anya Alonzo, a trans public servant, gave a heartfelt speech, expressing gratitude to the women present for their support of the community. She thanked Mayor Méndez for his belief in the project and his commitment to creating an inclusive and humane municipality that promotes equal opportunities in areas such as employment. Alonzo also thanked her family for their unwavering support and belief in her.
The event highlighted the ongoing struggle for rights, as trans individuals continue to face discrimination and violence. It underscored the importance of creating spaces for listening and reflection, where empathy and respect can flourish. The "Footprints of Transcendence" event sought to bridge the gap between understanding and action, promoting a society where all identities are recognized and valued.
