Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A serious traffic accident on Federal Highway 307 left five people injured Saturday, including a minor, after a collision between two vehicles near the Bel-Air hotel.
The crash occurred on the Tulum to Playa del Carmen stretch of the highway, heading northbound. It mobilized multiple emergency and security agencies to the scene.
National Guard highway division officers responded first, cordoning off the area to prevent further incidents and manage traffic, which was partially disrupted for several minutes.
Six ambulances, both public and private, arrived shortly after. Paramedics provided on-site medical care to the injured before transporting them to various hospitals in Playa del Carmen for further evaluation.
According to preliminary reports from federal authorities at the scene, the driver of a white Renault Kangoo had the right of way while traveling northbound.
However, a yellow Honda Fit reportedly emerged without caution from a dirt road beside the hotel and was struck violently, sending it into roadside vegetation.
The impact ejected two adults and a minor from the Honda Fit onto the asphalt. None were wearing seatbelts, which worsened their injuries.
A man remained trapped inside the wreckage. Firefighters arrived promptly and used hydraulic rescue tools, commonly called “jaws of life,” to extract him from the twisted metal.
Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, though several people sustained significant injuries. Both vehicles were later towed to an impound lot, where they will remain while authorities investigate to determine responsibility.
