Tlalnepantla, State of Mexico — The New Year brought happiness to the Hernández Vázquez family with the birth of Sofía Isabela, who became the first baby born at the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in 2026.

At 00:01 hours, the health personnel at the Gynecology and Obstetrics Hospital (HGO) with Family Medicine No. 60 of the Social Security in Tlalnepantla, State of Mexico, received the little girl in a successful cesarean section. She weighed 2.8 kilograms and measured 50 centimeters.

In compliance with the institutional protocols established by the Comprehensive Maternal Care Model (AMIIMSS) for continuous accompaniment throughout the reproductive process of women and their families, Sofía Isabela was taken into the arms of her mother, Andrea Guadalupe, 24 years old, as part of immediate attachment from the zero minute of birth, necessary for both the mother and the baby.

“I feel happy, I feel content, and it is something I can tell her when she is older,” expressed Andrea, who is originally from Cuautitlán Izcalli, State of Mexico, and became a mother for the first time.

In the surgery participated the anesthesiologist Elizabeth Rosas, the pediatrician Paola Marbella Trejo, the gynecologist Zaira Rebollar Martínez, the clinical coordinator of the night shift, Dr. Rosa Elena Cano Nava, as well as the surgical nurse Blanca Luz Cazares and the circulating nurse Mario Alberto Hernández Reyes.

Safe Births in Mexico

The HGO with Family Medicine No. 60 of the IMSS has recognition as a Baby-Friendly Hospital by the National Center for Gender Equity and Reproductive Health, for its implementation of activities promoting exclusive breastfeeding at birth, rooming-in, friendly care, among others.

During 2025, the specialist doctors of this hospital provided a total of 5,762,239 Family Medicine consultations and 21,102 specialty consultations, productivity that contributed to the fulfillment of the national goal of the 2-30-100 strategy (2 million surgeries, 30 million specialty consultations, and 100 million Family Medicine consultations).

The Social Security has advanced in the implementation of the AMIIMSS model always adhering to providing dignified and specialized treatment.

This model proposes a decalogue that health personnel must develop to strengthen the quality of care: preconception consultation, prenatal surveillance, vaginal delivery, information about cesarean section, friendly care, professional care, humane treatment, family planning, exclusive breastfeeding, and prevention of adolescent pregnancy.
