Fire at Cozumel Supermarket Forces Evacuation, Leaves Several with Smoke Inhalation

Firefighters respond to a blaze at the Bodega Aurrerá supermarket in Cozumel, Quintana Roo

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — A fire broke out at a Bodega Aurrerá supermarket in Cozumel on Sunday morning, forcing the evacuation of customers and employees and leaving several people with smoke inhalation.

The blaze started violently at the store’s main entrance in the Maravilla neighborhood, temporarily blocking the exit and prompting a hurried evacuation. The fire then spread to other parts of the building.

A thick column of smoke was visible from various points across the island, triggering an emergency response. Authorities also evacuated the adjacent Sam’s Club as a precaution.

Officials reported that several people showed symptoms of smoke inhalation, and one woman went to a hospital on her own for medical attention. No fatalities have been reported.

The fire caused significant material damage to the supermarket’s entrance area, leaving twisted metal structures and part of the facade affected by flames. Firefighters and security personnel remained on scene to extinguish the blaze and cool the area.

This incident occurs amid national tension following the recent killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” and similar reported incidents in other parts of the state and country. However, authorities have not officially linked the Cozumel fire to those events.
