Cancún, QRoo — The Secretary of Ecology and Environment of Quintana Roo has dispatched a team of forestry engineers to the community of Solferino, in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas, to evaluate the state of a millennia-old ceiba tree, considered a cultural and ecological symbol in the region.
The head of the agency, Óscar Rébora, explained that the objective is to issue a technical report that confirms the condition of the tree and determines if it remains alive or if its removal needs to be planned.
"The actions will depend on the result of this report, which will be key to guaranteeing the safety of the community and respect for the natural environment," he stated.
The ceiba is a sacred tree for diverse cultures, which necessitates special handling due to its symbolic value and its relevance within the local ecosystem. In the event the report confirms the specimen's death, the Secretary contemplates organizing a farewell ceremony to honor its legacy, recognizing its historical and cultural importance for the inhabitants of Solferino.
State authorities underscored that any decision will be made under criteria of environmental responsibility and respect for community traditions, with the aim of preserving both the natural heritage and the cultural identity of Quintana Roo.
