Emergency Crews Contain Palapa Fire Near Tulum, Preventing Spread to Jungle

Tulum, Quintana Roo — Emergency crews contained a fire in a traditional thatched-roof structure on the outskirts of Tulum on Wednesday, preventing the blaze from spreading to nearby jungle vegetation.

The fire broke out in a palapa on a property near Cenote Vesica and the Yura Tulum hotel, prompting a rapid response from civil protection units, firefighters, and state police.

According to initial reports, the fire was concentrated in the palapa structure, which was built with regional materials that posed a risk of rapid spread due to dry conditions and proximity to jungle vegetation.

Emergency personnel arrived at the scene within minutes and began containment and cooling operations. Their prompt intervention extinguished the flames before they could reach surrounding jungle areas, preventing more significant environmental damage.

No injuries were reported at the scene. The property’s foreign resident said he did not know what caused the fire and mentioned that he had reported the theft of two motorcycles from the same property in December.

Authorities conducted a preliminary inspection to rule out additional risks and verify no active hot spots remained that could reignite the fire. Officials have not yet determined whether the fire was accidental or intentional.

The area remained under supervision while safety operations were completed. The incident highlights the vulnerability of structures built with natural materials and the importance of rapid response to any fire threat near jungle areas.
