Cozumel, Quintana Roo — A judge has ordered eight people to stand trial on drug charges in this island municipality, after prosecutors presented evidence in two separate criminal cases involving the possession of illegal substances.

In the first case, Jairo Rogelio “N” and Rubén “N” were bound over to criminal proceedings for their alleged role in possessing marijuana with intent to distribute. Four others — Diego “N”, Chiquinquirá “N”, Karen Guadalupe “N” and Lucelmy Arahi “N” — face proceedings in the same case for simple possession of the drug.

The court ordered justified preventive detention for Jairo Rogelio “N”, Rubén “N” and Diego “N”, meaning they will remain in custody for the duration set by the judicial authority while their cases move forward.

In a second case, Christian Gabriel “N” and Miguel Johan “N” were also bound over to criminal proceedings for their alleged involvement in drug offenses, specifically street-level dealing through the simple possession of marijuana and cocaine.

The two cases are being handled separately by the courts based on the prosecutors’ investigations. Being bound over to proceedings allows the criminal process to continue so that responsibility can be determined, but it does not by itself constitute a conviction.

The investigations will proceed through the stages set out in Mexican law, and those charged retain the right to the presumption of innocence until a final judicial ruling is issued.
