José María Morelos, Quintana Roo — After several months of low prices, eggs have begun to recover their value in this municipality, with a crate now selling for as much as 65 pesos — a price increase that is once again being felt in family budgets.
Manuel Jesús Flota Cardeña, a local merchant, said the uptick began about a month ago, after the product had fallen to 50 pesos a crate or even less.
“It started going back up a month ago; now it’s at 65 pesos a crate,” he said.
The merchant attributed the earlier price drop to overproduction and stockpiling at poultry farms, as well as high temperatures that affected the product’s preservation and caused losses.
“When there was an oversupply of eggs, they had to lower the price a lot to move them,” he noted.
With the surplus now reduced, prices have started to recover and could reach 70 pesos per crate, although he considered it unlikely that they would climb much higher.
Despite the increase, he emphasized that families continue to buy eggs because they are part of the daily diet and considered an essential product.
