Dolphin Falls Unconscious During Hotel Show – Animal Rights Activists Demand Action

A dolphin performing at a show at the Barceló Riviera Maya hotel reportedly fell out of the pool and lost consciousness due to the severe impact. This incident has been brought to light by animal rights activists.

Animal rights groups including Animal Heroes, Dolphin Freedom, Marea, and Free Life Oceans have called for the closure of the hotel’s dolphin facility. They believe it to be one of the smallest in Mexico and have expressed concerns about the welfare of the dolphins there.

The incident was recorded by a tourist during a show offered this January, in the middle of the investigation carried out by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), following the death  of the specimens named Plata and Alex, in the same venue.

In a statement, the organizations recalled that for a year they have been carrying out an ongoing campaign to demand the closure of this dolphinarium, which is one of the smallest in Mexico.

“We have shown other tragedies, such as the death of the dolphins Alex and Plata, in just one year, which were never clarified . We have shown that the dolphin pool is smaller than that of humans, given that they swim freely at great distances and depths, and that they have nowhere to take shelter from the sun ,”

The groups have also highlighted previous incidents at the venue, including the unexplained deaths of dolphins named Alex and Plata. They are calling for transparency and demanding that all information about the affected dolphins be made public.

Their campaign continues to press for the closure of the dolphin facility at the Barceló Hotel.
