Cancún, Quintana Roo — A decomposing body was discovered Tuesday night inside an apartment in Cancún’s Paraíso Maya neighborhood after neighbors reported foul odors coming from the unit.
Municipal police officers confirmed the situation and requested assistance from the State Prosecutor’s Office, whose agents entered apartment 101 on the ground floor of Tower I around 9 p.m. to conduct their investigation.
Residents told police that an elderly man lived alone in the apartment. The man no longer worked and would occasionally go out for shopping, but neighbors hadn’t seen him for at least two days.
The building entrance is located on a walkway connecting Cenote Chikin Ha Street with Cenote Ponderosa Street in Block 47, Lot 15, where municipal police secured the area during the forensic investigation.
Initial investigations indicated the deceased man appeared to have been ill and had stopped working approximately two months ago for this reason.
Forensic experts examined the interior of the property to rule out possible signs of violence. Preliminary reports suggest the death may have resulted from illness.
The authorities’ mobilization drew attention from building residents, who remained outside their homes waiting for officials to complete their work.
The body was transported to the Forensic Medical Service facilities to determine the cause of death, pending the arrival of family members to claim the remains.
