Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The documentary “Ocean” will premiere this Saturday at the Sayab Planetarium, showcasing the current state of the world’s seas. The event will conclude with an intervention by members of the citizen collective Cenotes Urbanos.
José Urbina Bravo, a member of the collective and part of Sélvame del Tren, invited the public to this screening at the science venue, scheduled for 5 p.m. on Saturday.
“We have the privilege of premiering this documentary on Saturday, and the invitation to this place is for people who don’t know the true value of the oceans. It’s for people who have already given up,” said Urbina Bravo.
“These are the people I want to emphasize should attend, because we come from all parts of the Republic, from all parts of the world, to work in a hotel, in a bar, and we don’t really know the wealth and importance that this tourist destination has from an environmental point of view. An extraordinary jewel of an ecosystem is the place that is our home,” he added.
“Ocean” is an English production by David Attenborough, a pioneering documentary filmmaker in the genre. It premiered worldwide last May and, according to the producer’s information, had its first screening before King Charles III of the United Kingdom.
With a duration of 105 minutes, it addresses the current situation of oceans like the Caribbean Sea, one of the ecosystems with the greatest natural wealth, but which already faces serious problems with impacts on coral systems, abundant sargassum, and plastic pollution.
After its screening on Saturday, members of Cenotes Urbanos will have an intervention about ocean issues facing Playa del Carmen. Members of this collective have pointed out the impact on the sea due to pollution of the underground rivers that abound in this area of the country.
“Many people don’t know about it, many people are used to it being destroyed and that nothing can be done about it. So, I want to take advantage of the power of David Attenborough and the knowledge of the specialists who will be in this screening to add to the cause,” said Urbina Bravo.
