Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) invites residents and visitors to witness an archaeoastronomical event at the Maya site El Caracol in Punta Sur Ecological Park on Thursday, April 16.
The free event begins at 6 p.m. and will feature the sunset aligning with the upper window of the pre-Hispanic structure, showcasing the advanced astronomical knowledge of the Maya civilization.
Punta Sur director Jesús Benavides Andrade said such alignments in pre-Hispanic structures have been significant for archaeoastronomical studies, helping experts understand the relationship between Maya architecture and solar cycles. He described it as a unique opportunity to connect with the island’s ancestral legacy.
Attendees must register in advance by emailing parquepuntasur@cozumelparks.org, as access will be controlled. The observation depends on weather conditions.
FPMC general director Juanita Alonso Marrufo emphasized that such activities strengthen local identity and pride in Cozumel’s historical and cultural heritage.
