Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Cozumel’s hotel sector posted record-breaking occupancy figures in February, with an average rate of 84% and peaks above 90% during the island’s carnival and food festival, according to the Cozumel Hotel Association.
Isela Valenzuela Jiménez, the association’s manager, said the February performance marked a one-percentage-point increase over the same month last year, reflecting the collective promotional efforts of member hotels.
“The strategy has focused on key segments like romance, with special packages for couples, and family travel, in preparation for Easter and summer seasons,” Valenzuela Jiménez explained. “We design campaigns with benefits for families traveling with children aged 4 to 12, aiming to attract more domestic and international visitors.”
The carnival and gastronomic festival drove significant tourist traffic, while international promotion included the association’s recent participation in the Travel and Adventure Show in Chicago alongside the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council. There, they presented the destination to more than 55 travel agents.
Valenzuela Jiménez noted that the recent publication of a diving guide has generated interest due to its professional photography and technical details, such as boat and equipment specifications. She also highlighted that the U.S. diving market, which accounts for about 60% of Cozumel’s demand, is strengthening.
“According to the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association, the number of certified divers in the United States increased by 25%,” she said. “Diving is a year-round activity here, with repeat visitors who return multiple times to enjoy the Caribbean’s unique conditions, especially from colder states during winter.”
