Cozumel Museum Launches Nature Painting Contest for 39th Anniversary

Artists painting nature scenes in Cozumel for the museum's competition

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The Cozumel Island Museum has launched a painting competition called “Maravillas de la Naturaleza 2026” (Wonders of Nature 2026) to mark its 39th anniversary. The contest invites local artists to depict the island’s rich ecosystems through their artwork.

Museum director Isela Carrillo Cupul said the competition aims to encourage participation from both amateur and established artists while promoting appreciation and conservation of the natural landscapes that define Cozumel.

Participants must be at least 18 years old, Mexican or foreign, and have lived on the island for at least one year. They must submit an original work inspired by Cozumel’s ecosystems and biodiversity.

Artworks must measure between 30 x 30 centimeters and 80 x 80 centimeters, created on paper, canvas, fabric, or wood using any painting technique without additional materials. While pieces may be framed, this will not affect judging.

Each submission must include a technical sheet with the title, technique, dimensions, and the artist’s full name. The museum will accept entries from March 27 to 31, 2026, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at its offices, with participants responsible for transporting their works.

The awards ceremony will take place on April 8 during the opening of a collective exhibition as part of the museum’s anniversary celebrations. The top three winners will receive cash prizes of 3,500 pesos, 2,500 pesos, and 1,750 pesos, respectively.

FPMC general director Juanita Alonso Marrufo noted that the contest has become a platform to strengthen the connection between art, identity, and nature, encouraging community involvement in environmental preservation.
