Cozumel, Mexico — The Subdirectorate of Traffic in Cozumel has initiated an educational program aimed at fostering responsible road safety habits from an early age. The initiative, which targets elementary school students, provides interactive lessons on traffic rules, signage interpretation, and responsible driving—both for motorized and non-motorized vehicles.
Promoting Road Safety Through Hands-On Learning
The program was recently introduced to first and second-grade students at Eladio Novelo Gil Elementary School. Children participated in practical activities, including bicycle use and simulated street navigation, where they learned fundamental traffic signs such as speed bumps, crosswalks, mandatory stops, and continuous turns.
The project’s goal extends beyond shaping future responsible drivers; it also aims to cultivate a generation of conscientious pedestrians and citizens who respect public spaces. Additionally, organizers hope students will share their knowledge with family members, positively influencing adult behavior on the road.
Estefany Guadalupe Quijano Loría, the program coordinator, emphasized that these workshops benefit not only the children but also their parents. "Students relay clear and simple information to their families about improving driving habits," she said.
Expansion Plans for Island-Wide Impact
Authorities intend to expand the program to other schools across the island, fostering a generational shift in traffic safety awareness. In its initial phase, 74 participants—including students and some parents—took part, laying the groundwork for safer and more mindful road practices in Cozumel.
