Playa del Carmen, MX. The presence of a Costco branch is not yet 100 percent confirmed in Playa del Carmen, although there have already been approaches by representatives of this company, reported Antón Bojórquez, municipal secretary of Economic Development and Investment Attraction.
Questioned about the potential arrival of this wholesale store to Playa del Carmen, the official indicated that, despite executives of this company in Mexico announcing last October their plans to reach the Riviera Maya, there is still nothing concrete.
He specified that the exact date and location in the city where this branch could be built are also not known for certain, in case the company formalizes its arrival in Playa del Carmen.
“There is still nothing concrete, but they have mentioned that they like the investment in public works and the investment in public security that has been made here in the municipality. And that would be one of the reasons why Costco and other large companies could establish themselves in the municipality,” he added.
Antón Bojórquez said that, in case Costco decides to invest in the municipality, its branch should be in the north or south of the city.
“Especially because the urban sprawl no longer has land of the size that developers like Costco may require. We estimate that it could require about 10 hectares. In the city center it would be hardly viable,” he explained.
Finally, the official commented that a possible site could be the area near the intersection of CTM Avenue and Playa del Carmen Boulevard, where years before a commercial plaza had been planned, which ultimately did not materialize.
Currently, there is only one Costco store in Quintana Roo, which is located on Kabah Avenue in Cancún.
