Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The Mexican Employers’ Confederation (Coparmex) in Chetumal has proposed that the state capital become the sports capital as one of the strategies to attract visitors during 2026, following the success of the Christmas Night Race. The initiative aims to involve residents, the business sector, and the government.
According to Coparmex leader Josué Osmany Palomo Hoil, the sporting event demonstrated Chetumal’s potential to become the sports capital, as a project to develop during the next year, with the goal of making it a sports powerhouse.
In this regard, ten sporting events are expected to take place next year, including: Duathlon of Love, Sailing Competition in Xul-Ha, Triathlon in Calderitas-Oxtankah, Children’s Race, Crossfit Competition, the 21K Chetumal, Chetumal-Tamalcab Open Water Swim, Adapted Sports Olympics, Cross Country in Laguna Guerrero, 2026 Christmas Race, and the Bacalar Marina Regatta. Participation of 4,500 athletes and their families is anticipated.
Palomo Hoil considers that each of these activities can generate economic spillover in each of the venues where they will be held, in addition to promoting tourism in southern Quintana Roo and local sports identity.
Furthermore, Palomo Hoil stated that “Chetumal Capital of Sports is not a slogan, it is a reality we are building. Chetumal is ready to become a regional sports powerhouse.”
It is worth mentioning that, regarding the Christmas Race, it was an event with a cause and inclusion, which achieved historic participation from people in the southern zone, as hundreds of participants gathered for both the 3K and 5K races, including entire families, children, people who attended with their pets, and some even came in costumes according to the season.
On this, he mentioned: “It was very significant to see our main avenues active, full of families and athletes. These urban routes also show that Chetumal has the capacity to diversify its routes and not depend solely on the boulevard for high-level events.”
Similarly, he indicated that as a result of the event, unity was seen between the business sector, local merchants, and citizens, demonstrating that everyone is interested in enhancing the capital city.
