Cancun, Mexico — Cancun awoke on Friday, October 3, under an alert for heavy rains and electrical storms, according to forecasts from the National Meteorological Service (SMN) and the National Water Commission (Conagua). Authorities warned that the meteorological conditions could generate puddling and flooding in various zones of the city.
During the morning, the municipal president of Benito Juárez, Ana Paty Peralta, reported that due to a trough of low pressure and the influx of moisture from the Caribbean Sea, skies are expected to be partly cloudy to overcast, with very heavy rains, electrical activity, and northerly and northeasterly winds of up to 15 kilometers per hour, with higher gusts. The maximum temperature will range between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius, with a thermal sensation that could reach 36 degrees.
In the regional forecast, the SMN indicated that for this Friday the Yucatan Peninsula would have a cool morning with partly cloudy skies. However, during the afternoon a hot environment is forecast, with overcast skies and intense rains in the center of Yucatan, as well as very heavy rains in Campeche and Quintana Roo. These precipitations could cause disruptions on roadways, in addition to rising levels in rivers and streams.
Wind conditions will persist from the east and northeast with speeds of 10 to 20 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 40 kilometers per hour in the region.
In other zones of the country, the Gulf of Mexico will register overcast skies and intense rains in Veracruz and Tabasco, with possible landslides and hail. Intense precipitations are also forecast for the South Pacific during the day.
Authorities recommended the population stay attentive to official notices and take precautions against the risk of puddling and electrical storms in Cancun and other municipalities of Quintana Roo.
