Quintana Roo, Mexico — A cold front is bringing a significant drop in temperatures, rain, and strong winds to Mexico’s Quintana Roo state, with authorities issuing warnings and restrictions for coastal areas.
The weather turned unsettled this week, with average temperatures around 23°C (73°F). Officials from civil protection and meteorological agencies say rural communities and the Mayan zone could see lows between 13°C and 15°C (55°F to 59°F) mid-week.
Rainfall between 5 and 25 mm is expected, with partly cloudy skies. North winds are generating gusts up to 70 km/h (43 mph) and waves of 3 to 4 meters (10 to 13 feet), prompting the Quintana Roo Port Authority (APIQROO) to restrict navigation for vessels under and over 40 feet in length.
Over the city and the rest of the state, skies clouded sporadically as part of the effects of Cold Front 37, which is now retreating from national territory. The National Meteorological Service (CONAGUA) indicates that conditions of occasional rain, which could become intense, will persist.
Light, scattered rains occurred across the city on Monday afternoon without major consequences. These conditions will continue overnight. The north wind effects are noticeable, with strong gusts recorded in coastal areas, intensifying at night.
Some residents expressed relief at the milder weather after days of intense heat. “It’s good to feel a bit of cold now, as the heat was very strong. With weather like this, you just want to stay home, but we have to go out and do our activities,” said Abraham Martínez.
