Massive Cocaine Haul Washes Up on Cozumel Beaches

Armed security personnel conducting an operation on a sandy beach, marking off an area with tape, with packets lined up on the ground in front of them against a backdrop of the ocean and blue sky with clouds.

Residents of Cozumel, also known as the "Island of the Swallows", recently discovered 19 packages of cocaine washed up on a local beach. Each package, wrapped in black rubber and brown tape marked with "GAN 12", weighed approximately one kilogram. The total amount of cocaine found amounted to around 20 kilograms.

Upon discovery, the drugs were immediately handed over to the relevant authorities. Soldiers from the Tenth Military Region and the 34th military zone swiftly arrived at the scene, cordoning off the beach area while the packages were collected.

The Mexican Army and the National Guard confirmed the discovery, stating that the packages were found at the edge of the beach. Earlier this year, seven packages of suspected cocaine were seized by the National Guard and the Secretariat of National Defense in two separate incidents on the eastern side of Cozumel Island.

The first discovery was made during ground patrols when authorities found three packages marked with an eagle image among the sargassum seaweed on Tortugas beach. The second discovery was made at Punta Chiqueros beach, where four packages with the same markings were found. Preliminary investigations suggest that the eagle image indicates the packages may belong to a Central American criminal group.

After being secured, the packages were handed over to the appropriate authorities. The Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) reported that 10 kilograms of cocaine were found at different locations in Cozumel, secured by the National Guard and the Mexican Army.

During surveillance patrols on Punta Chiqueros beach, National Guard members found five packages, each approximately 22 centimeters long and weighing about a kilogram, wrapped in black rubber and clear tape, marked with an "Eagle" inscription. They later found two more packages with the same markings. Three additional packages were found on the same beach, all with similar characteristics.

The packages were handed over to the appropriate authorities. This year, a total of 64 kilograms of drugs have been washed up on Cozumel's beaches.
