Cozumel groups seek fireworks ban over safety and animal welfare

Fireworks exploding in the night sky over Cozumel

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Various civil groups and associations have launched a campaign requesting the Cozumel City Council to prohibit the sale and use of fireworks during the December holiday season due to the risks they pose to the population and wildlife.

The organizations warned that handling gunpowder and fire involves elevated danger, especially when manipulated by minors without necessary preparation, which puts their safety and that of those around them at risk.

Maritza Basurto Basurto, director of the Adopción y Conciencia Animal association, called on municipal authorities to reinforce measures and enforce existing regulations to prevent the commercialization of these devices on the island.

The activist noted that explosions significantly affect domestic animals, wildlife, and stray animals, and detailed that during these dates the number of lost pets due to disorientation can triple.

The petition was signed by the Centro de Autismo Cozumel, Adopción y Conciencia Animal, Hope Asociación Pro-Defensa Animal, Sociedad Humanitaria, Red de Mujeres X’Kaán, Kan Cozumel, and Cimac, and was officially delivered to the City Council.
