Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas — A crowd of 4,757 people set a new Guinness World Record on Friday by forming the largest human soccer jersey ever created at Víctor Manuel Reyna Stadium in Chiapas.
The participants gathered to create a monumental jersey measuring 48 meters wide by 35.5 meters high, symbolizing national unity among Mexico’s 32 states ahead of the 2026 World Cup. High school students, university students, and residents from various neighborhoods in the state capital responded to the call starting early Friday morning.
Organizers distributed green, white, and red shirts for participants to occupy their positions on the field. The final design incorporated the colors of the Mexican flag and featured a central phrase.
Alfredo Arista, an official Guinness World Records adjudicator, supervised every detail of the formation to ensure compliance with international standards. He called the event historic and praised the camaraderie shown by attendees in achieving a common goal. After validating evidence and conducting the official count, the judge confirmed the number surpassed any previous record in this category.
State Governor Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar led the celebration and thanked the federal government for supporting efforts to showcase the region globally. The state leader emphasized that this act marks the official start of activities related to the 2026 World Cup in Mexican territory.
During the event, participants demonstrated how collective organization can transform community identity into an astonishing milestone.
The federal Tourism Ministry incorporated this achievement into the agenda of the so-called Social World Cup, a strategy promoting sports and culture. Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez Zamora explained they aim to involve the population in activities that leave a lasting tourism and social legacy. The enthusiasm of thousands of volunteers reflected the hospitable spirit characteristic of southeastern Mexico residents.
The success of the human jersey serves as a calling card to demonstrate Chiapas’s logistical capacity and societal enthusiasm. The initiative not only broke a world record but also strengthened the sense of belonging among young people who actively participated in the formation.
