CHETUMAL — The president of the Chetumal Business Coordinating Council (CCE), Wilma Contreras Canto, has expressed hope that controversies surrounding Royal Caribbean's "Perfect Day" project will be resolved, allowing it to proceed. The business leader emphasized the significant boost the project would represent not only for the Costa Maya but for the entire southern region of Quintana Roo.
The head of the organization stated that the business sector had worked for many years to attract investment to this part of the state. Now that this flow of capital has been secured, she said the priority is to protect it to spur further projects and stimulate economic growth in the area.
"We have had several meetings with the shipping company's executives, and there is full confidence that the project will indeed be sustainable and environmentally friendly," said Contreras Canto. "It is truly an unprecedented opportunity that will help to spur economic growth in southern Quintana Roo, something that has been requested for years. Therefore, it is important to protect this investment and ensure that the positions of so-called environmental groups, who are unfamiliar with the proposal and introduce arguments, do not hinder it and create uncertainty for other investors, thus impeding development in the south."
She explained that the business group's support for Perfect Day is based not only on the direct and indirect economic benefits but also on the project's potential to create thousands of jobs and help strengthen existing infrastructure in the destination.
Similarly, she noted that the initiative and willingness shown by the cruise line to address community needs demonstrates a commitment to working alongside the population and authorities to be part of the south's development.
"In fact, they are not only bringing investment for this project, but also to improve the streets, the drainage, and in security matters because they plan to put something like a C2 in Mahahual, health and wellness services, so that those who live there and those who visit the Mayan coast, do so in a safe environment," Contreras Canto stated. "The company is considering all of this, and it is positive because this will give the destination a better image."
She emphasized that the business sector will extend its vote of confidence not only to Royal Caribbean but to any investor interested in bringing capital to the region with projects that genuinely boost the economy and translate into well-being and shared prosperity for the families of Quintana Roo.
