Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The Othón P. Blanco municipal government canceled the Cheese Festival scheduled for Sunday, February 22, in Chetumal, citing security concerns amid nationwide violence following the confirmed death of a major cartel leader.
In an official statement, municipal authorities said the event’s organizing committee made the decision in response to violent incidents reported in various cities across Mexico after the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.”
While no related incidents have been reported in the state capital, officials said they prioritized the safety of families, vendors, and visitors who would have attended the gastronomic event.
The Cheese Festival was part of activities commemorating the fourth anniversary of Paseo Héroes, a landmark in the city. It was to feature local and regional producers offering a wide variety of artisanal cheeses and dairy products, along with cultural activities, artistic performances, and family-friendly spaces.
Municipal authorities indicated they will announce in the coming days whether the event will be rescheduled or canceled permanently, once conditions ensure a calm and orderly environment.
The city government urged residents to stay informed through official channels and avoid spreading unverified rumors or information that could create uncertainty.
