Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa promoted the lesser-known municipality of José María Morelos at the Tianguis Turístico 2025, highlighting its natural and cultural attractions, including the Cave of Hanging Snakes. The event, held in Baja California, served as a platform to showcase emerging destinations beyond Quintana Roo’s traditional northern tourism corridor.
“We are here in Baja California discussing tourism, and José María Morelos had to be part of Mayakan. We will talk about everything it offers to the world, inviting visitors from everywhere to experience it and achieve shared prosperity,” Lezama stated.
A Natural Wonder: The Cave of Hanging Snakes
Located in the Kantemó ejido, approximately 60 kilometers from José María Morelos’ municipal seat and 250 kilometers from Cancún, the Cave of Hanging Snakes is renowned for a unique ecological phenomenon. Mouse-eating snakes dangle from the cave’s ceiling, capturing bats mid-flight with remarkable precision.
This behavior, documented by biologists and filmmakers worldwide, has made the site a focal point for ecotourism, scientific research, and adventure travel. The cave is part of a larger subterranean ecosystem featuring stalactites, water bodies, and endemic species.
Beyond the Cave: A Holistic Ecotourism Experience
Visitors to Kantemó can also explore jungle cycling trails, hiking routes, nocturnal wildlife observation, and cultural exchanges with local Maya communities. The project is managed by a community cooperative, ensuring tourism revenue directly benefits residents.
Governor Lezama emphasized the need to diversify tourism beyond Quintana Roo’s northern hotspots. “José María Morelos was a municipality forgotten for a long time, but today it is on the map and offers incredible experiences for tourists,” she said.
Strategic Location in the Maya Region
José María Morelos serves as a gateway to southern Quintana Roo, connecting with Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Bacalar. With its promotion at Tianguis Turístico, the Cave of Hanging Snakes is poised to become a symbol of sustainable tourism in Mexico, drawing global attention to the region’s untapped potential.
