Cancún to Host 89th Mexican Banking Convention After 24-Year Absence

Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama meeting with ABM officials to plan the 89th Mexican Banking Convention in Cancún

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama announced that Cancún will host the 89th Mexican Banking Convention from March 18 to 20, marking the event’s return to the Mexican Caribbean after 24 years.

Lezama met with Emilio Romano, president of the Mexican Banking Association (ABM), and Regina García Cuéllar, the association’s director general, to coordinate the convention’s organization. The governor said Cancún, known as the “World Vacation Capital,” will serve as the epicenter for banking leaders to discuss financial, economic, digital, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity issues affecting Latin America.

“Together with the business, hotel, and government sectors, we are ready to welcome bankers so they can enjoy Quintana Roo’s natural beauty, cuisine, sun, and beaches,” Lezama stated. “Their stay should translate into economic benefits for all households.”

During the meeting at the C5 facilities, officials discussed financial education, economic empowerment for female heads of households and artisans, support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), digitalization, productivity, behavioral economics, artificial intelligence, and geopolitics.

Romano explained that the convention aims to formalize Mexico’s financial system and advance banking digitalization. “Eighty percent of transactions are still conducted in cash, which opens space for corruption,” he said. “It’s crucial to digitalize the economy and ensure all services are banked.”

Officials also announced an Expo Mundo PyME event before the convention, part of the “Plan Mexico” agreement with President Claudia Sheinbaum to secure financing for SMEs. The banking convention will include alternative sporting activities such as a race and a paddle tournament.

This will be the fifth time Cancún hosts the Mexican Banking Convention.
