Cancún, Quintana Roo — Demand for certified birth certificates in Cancún has surged significantly, with over 4,700 documents issued in the first two months of 2026, according to municipal officials.

The increase is primarily driven by school pre-enrollment periods and the need for documentation to access social assistance programs. Eduardo Kuyoc Rodríguez, director of the Civil Registry in Cancún, explained that parents are seeking certified copies mainly for school registrations and personal or social welfare procedures.

“Parents are coming to process certified copies, first for enrollment issues and second for personal matters or social assistance paperwork,” the municipal official stated.

In response, local authorities are preparing a modernization and expansion strategy to prevent bottlenecks and improve user experience. The plan includes physical upgrades at key locations, with improvements scheduled to begin in March at the Alfredo V. Bonfil and Region 95 registry offices. These enhancements aim to provide more efficient and humane services, particularly for sensitive procedures like death and birth registrations.

Kuyoc Rodríguez also mentioned plans to renovate the busy registry office at Parque de las Palapas. These adjustments are designed not only to reduce wait times but also to prepare technical infrastructure for new federal requirements, including expediting the issuance of biometric CURP (Unique Population Registry Code) documents in the municipality.
