Mexico City — The Mexican government has designated Cancún and Playa del Carmen among 61 priority municipalities for a new national peace strategy that combines security measures with social programs to address the root causes of violence.
The mayors of both Quintana Roo tourist destinations, Ana Paty Peralta of Benito Juárez (Cancún) and Estefanía Mercado of Solidaridad (Playa del Carmen), participated in a high-level meeting at the National Palace led by President Claudia Sheinbaum.
The “México Imparable” strategy focuses not only on security deployments but also on addressing social factors contributing to violence through coordinated federal programs.
Following the meeting in the Treasury Hall, Mayor Mercado confirmed that Playa del Carmen will receive federal support for projects including massive urban lighting, construction of new high schools, and strengthening sports and cultural infrastructure.
Mayor Peralta emphasized the importance of interagency coordination, stating: “We will redouble efforts and coordinate with federal agencies to work every day on building peace in Cancún.”
The national strategy includes the launch of “Territories of Peace,” a scheme where federal departments including Interior, Education, Culture, and Tourism will work directly with municipalities to reclaim public spaces and strengthen social fabric in areas with high vulnerability and development gaps.
Key federal cabinet members including Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez and Education Secretary Mario Delgado attended the meeting, reaffirming the commitment to comprehensive intervention in Quintana Roo’s main tourist destinations.
