Cancún Will Not Issue Permits for Fireworks This Year, Municipality Assures

The Benito Juárez municipality has reinforced the prohibition of fireworks sales in public spaces during the December season by implementing surveillance operations and economic sanctions.

The Directorate of Commerce and Services in Public Spaces in Benito Juárez will not issue a single permit for the sale of fireworks, including so-called cold fireworks, stated the head of the department, Gamaliel Canto Cambranis.

“We must remember that through the Directorate it is not possible to obtain permits for fireworks sales since selling in public spaces is prohibited, as citizen security is prioritized,” he said.

For this reason, since the first days of December, a municipal operation began to verify that there are no stalls installed in public sites, an effort that is also shared with the Benito Juárez Directorate of Civil Protection.

The sale of fireworks, including so-called cold fireworks, is prohibited in public spaces. In addition to removing stalls and confiscating merchandise found in public spaces, people caught offering these products will be sanctioned with an administrative report and payment of a fine ranging from 500 to 5,200 pesos.

This includes also called “cold fireworks,” which consist of those that generate white or silver sparks and do not burn on contact, do not produce smoke, or odors.

“It is very important that citizens, when they detect this type of merchandise, report it to us through the complaint numbers so that we can intervene immediately,” he said.

Canto Cambranis mentioned that so far they have addressed one complaint of a person selling fireworks on Lakin Avenue in Cancún. There are also areas with a high influx of merchants, such as Nichupté Avenue, regions 100, and the northern zone of the city.
