Cancún Internet Provider Accuses Civil Protection Officer of Extortion Attempt

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Managers of an internet service provider accused a civil protection officer from the Benito Juárez municipality of attempting to extort them for 50,000 pesos to ignore permit violations during an inspection on Monday.

According to the managers, the supervisor from the Civil Protection Department arrived in a municipal vehicle, entered the company’s parking lot, and demanded to review documents and permits. Upon finding that some permits lacked renewals, the officer allegedly requested 50,000 pesos, or 25,000 pesos if that amount was unavailable, to “look the other way” and remove any repair or maintenance requirements from the inspection report.

“After the visit and observations, this person, in a meeting with me, mentioned he could ‘help’ for a certain amount and would remove from the report everything that required repairs and general maintenance of the warehouse, based on what he noted,” said an employee. “After several calls and consultations, my manager informed me that no payment will be made to the inspector.”

The alleged victims called on authorities to intervene and address misconduct within the Benito Juárez municipal departments.

This is not the first corruption accusation against municipal workers in Cancún. From 2024 through late 2025, 69 public servants in Cancún faced administrative procedures and, in some cases, criminal investigations for irregularities in their duties.
