Cancún, Quintana Roo — Cancún will open its first municipal homeless shelter in early March, officials announced, with the facility designed to provide comprehensive support for people living on the streets and struggling with addiction.
The shelter, named “Para Transformar Vidas” (To Transform Lives), is located in the city’s Supermanzana 228 and is 98 percent complete, undergoing final preparations. It will have capacity for 50 people.
During an inspection tour, Mayor Ana Paty Peralta emphasized that the project aims to offer more than temporary refuge. “For the first time in history, Cancún will have a shelter like this run by the municipality. In this space, we are going to give a second chance at life to many people,” she said.
Comprehensive and Dignified Care
The center features a medical clinic, psychological care areas, a kitchen, dining room, dormitories with bunk beds, and multipurpose spaces. Specialized services will include addiction rehabilitation therapy, ongoing medical monitoring, and recreational activities aimed at social reintegration.
Alberto Ortuño Báez, director of the Municipal Institute Against Addictions (IMCA), stated that this model will not only ensure food and hygiene but also tackle the root causes of marginalization, violence, and discrimination. He added that the shelter’s operation is expected to improve the city’s perception of safety and urban image.
