Cancún deploys 7,000 police for tourist safety this holiday

Police officers on patrol during holiday season in Cancun

Cancún, Mexico — The Cancún Secretariat of Citizen Security will deploy approximately 7,000 police officers across the state for the Guadalupe-Reyes holiday operation, which will run from December 12 to January 8, announced the head of the department, Julio César Gómez.

Participating institutions must suspend vacations to have 100% of operational personnel available, given the high influx of national and foreign tourists expected during the season. The operation will be inter-institutional, coordinated with armed forces, municipal police, and state corporations, with special surveillance in tourist areas, commercial zones, and high-traffic locations.

“We are responsible for supporting all tourist activity and the economic spillover expected this year-end. We work hand in hand with the armed forces and municipal police to strengthen the state’s security,” stated Gómez, who estimated a total deployment of 7,000 officers, with around 800 in the municipality of Benito Juárez, a figure to be confirmed by the municipal corporation.

They will implement special escorts for citizens and businesses during bonus payments, following the model applied during the Buen Fin shopping event, where no incidents were recorded. Regarding the celebrations for the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe on December 12, municipal police will maintain coordination with churches to monitor pilgrimages.

With this operation, authorities aim to guarantee a safe holiday season for residents and visitors in Quintana Roo.

As reported by REPORTUR.mx, in September, 725 body cameras were delivered to officers of the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit of Benito Juárez. The event took place in the municipal corporation’s esplanade, with the presence of Governor Mara Lezama, Mayor Ana Paty Peralta, the head of the Secretariat of Citizen Security, Jaime Padilla, the State Attorney General, Raciel López, among other guests.
