Sea turtle protection efforts on Cancún beach during 2025 season

Cancún, Quintana Roo — The municipality of Benito Juárez concluded the 2025 sea turtle protection season with historic results, safeguarding more than 1,203,000 eggs in 10,132 nests, according to Municipal President Ana Paty Peralta.

The Ecology Department report indicated that operations were conducted across 52 enclosures distributed along the coastline, through 714 daytime and nighttime patrols that increased surveillance and reduced risks for species arriving on the beaches.

The municipal authority emphasized that training was crucial to the season’s success, with 2,735 people—including security agents, lifeguards, and volunteers—receiving specialized instruction. Additionally, 53 educational talks and activities reached 841 people.

During the Sea Turtle Protection and Conservation Committee session, progress was reported in monitoring, enclosure protection, and environmental awareness initiatives. By species, the municipality documented more than 1,193,000 white turtle eggs, over 8,000 loggerhead turtle eggs, and approximately 1,800 hawksbill turtle eggs.

The municipal government stated that the program will continue to be strengthened as part of its environmental policy to protect sea turtles and the ecosystems of the Mexican Caribbean.
