Bishop Pedro Pablo Elizondo Cárdenas has announced plans to lay the foundation stone for a new cathedral in Cancún's Ombligo Verde reserve next Tuesday. The cathedral will be built in a "Vernacular" style and will feature a monumental cross atop a pyramid, a nod to the origins of the Christian faith in the region. The ceremony will be attended by the Governor of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama, and the municipal president, Ana Patricia Peralta de la Peña.
The bishop stated that the cross will hold significant meaning for Catholic parishioners in Cancún. Its location within one of Cancún's few ecological reserves symbolizes the birth of Christianity in the area. "We will have a monumental cross on a pyramid, reflecting the moment when Hernán Cortez arrived in Cozumel and planted a cross on a pyramid, marking the start of the Christian faith," he said. He added that the cathedral's design and location in the midst of the jungle will make it a unique place of worship.
The bishop also expressed his joy at celebrating his twentieth anniversary as bishop and the elevation of the Diocese Cancún-Chetumal. He highlighted the rapid growth in the number of churches, priests, apostolates, and lay groups in the region.
In addition, preparations are already underway for the Guadalupe feast in December. The bishop expects the arrival of thousands of torchbearers, as is traditional. He noted that during the first weeks of December, roads across the state and nation will be filled with people traveling by various means, carrying their torches to express their petitions and give thanks to the Virgin Mary.
