Cancun, Quintana Roo — Domestic passenger traffic at Cancun International Airport fell 7.3% in February, limiting overall growth to just 0.4% despite a rise in international travelers, according to the latest report from Aeropuertos del Sureste (ASUR).
The airport handled 630,468 domestic passengers in February, down from 680,189 during the same period last year. For the first two months of 2026, domestic traffic totaled 1.37 million passengers, an 8% decrease compared to early 2025.
International traffic provided a modest boost, increasing 3.3% in February to 1.87 million passengers. Over January and February, international arrivals reached 3.86 million, up 2.7% year-over-year.
Combined passenger traffic for the first two months of 2026 reached 5.23 million, a marginal 0.3% increase from the same period in 2025.
Despite the reported growth in international numbers, some airport workers say they haven’t seen a corresponding increase in activity. “There might be more international passengers, but it’s not noticeable. For the past two weeks, we’ve seen less movement at the airport,” said Sebastián Solís, an employee at a baggage wrapping station.
The winter season, marked by heavy snowfall in key markets like the United States and Canada, typically drives travel to the Mexican Caribbean.
