Cancún, Quintana Roo — Cancún International Airport, one of Latin America’s busiest airports, experienced an atypical day of operations on Sunday due to security concerns related to violence in Jalisco state and weather disruptions affecting flights to and from the United States.
Airport operator Aeropuertos del Sureste (ASUR) reported that while security reinforcement falls under the National Guard’s responsibility, no specific threats to the airport or its facilities had been reported. Authorities deployed a National Guard patrol with four officers at the airport access road before the private flight terminal traffic light.
Flight operations saw minimal direct security impact, with only one departure to Guadalajara affected, prompting officials to remain vigilant for any developing situations.
The airport had scheduled 573 flights for Sunday, February 22: 287 arrivals (77 domestic, 210 international) and 286 departures (78 domestic, 208 international). Connectivity with Guadalajara included six arrivals (four Volaris, two Viva Aerobus) and seven departures (four Volaris, three Viva Aerobus).
Weather conditions in the United States caused more significant disruptions, resulting in 30 delayed flights: 15 arrivals (six American Airlines, three Air Canada, four Spirit, two United Airlines) and 15 departures with the same airline distribution.
Four arrivals were canceled (three JetBlue, one American Airlines), along with 14 departures (nine JetBlue, four American Airlines, one United Airlines).
Affected cities included:
- Boston
- Chicago
- Dallas
- Detroit
- Edmonton
- Fort Lauderdale
