PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MX — The business sector of the Riviera Maya is working on an ambitious project to transform this tourist destination into an international benchmark for innovation and entrepreneurship, while also consolidating it as one of the most attractive points for investment in Mexico.
Luis Zamora, president of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Commission of the Employers' Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex) Riviera Maya, explained that the objective is to strengthen the business fabric and diversify the region's economic offerings.
“At Coparmex, we are working in general, at the central level, to strengthen the business fabric, and from the part of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Commission, we also have an initiative in which we don't want to be seen only for our natural beauty as a tourist destination, but to also convert it. There is much to do; here we are working, collaborating in these types of ecosystems to convert Playa del Carmen into an international-level hub of innovation, in addition to being a great tourist destination, because of course we have everything in the heart of the Riviera Maya,” he stated.
The businessman acknowledged that Playa del Carmen has faced recent challenges, stemming from international and environmental factors, including the massive arrival of sargassum seaweed. However, he highlighted that the actions undertaken have allowed for significant advances in the destination's recovery.
“There are a series of changes in the world currently that have affected it, both political and climatic, but well, right now, finally, as we well know, recent news, the beaches are clean and not just because the wind changed, but because changes have been made that have caused it to be cleaned, which is now reflected. And well, it is our job to communicate that there are many things being worked on to improve this, and we are very confident in continuing to work so that investment keeps coming,” he affirmed.
He added that Coparmex seeks to consolidate Playa del Carmen not only as a world-class tourist destination but also as a space for innovation and business development.
