Bull Shark Season Active in Playa del Carmen Despite Weather

Bull sharks during a dive in Playa del Carmen waters

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, January 2. – With fluctuations due to weather conditions, the bull shark season has remained active for diving service providers in Playa del Carmen, although temporary port closures have forced the suspension of recreational activities in the sea at various times.

According to Candy López, a dive guide specialized in the attraction and observation of bull sharks, beyond the instability of the weather, the season has been positive in terms of the number of specimens present in the area.

She explained that during descents, high shark activity has been recorded, with the sharks within their natural cycle, with the presence of both adult and juvenile specimens, reflecting a constant dynamic in the diving area.

She detailed that in each dive, whether for observation or attraction purposes, between 10 and 15 female bull sharks can be counted, a figure that has remained stable throughout the season.

Finally, she indicated that coordinated work between authorities, permit holders, and fishermen has allowed for the identification of an increase in the bull shark population, which she considered an indicator of a healthy marine ecosystem in the region, despite occasional impacts from the weather.
