Quintana Roo, Mexico — The Attorney General’s Office of Quintana Roo (FGE) has confirmed the discovery of Kristian Raymundo Medina Canché’s remains, officially closing his missing persons case after more than two years of uncertainty. Medina, 33, was reported missing on March 10, 2023.
Disappearance and Investigation
Medina resided with his sister in Cancún. According to family testimony, he returned home on the evening of March 9, 2023, after being out all day. The following morning, he left for Playa del Carmen in search of work but vanished later that same day.
Although his phone continued emitting location signals near the Sandos Playa del Carmen hotel, the family’s attempts to access the hotel’s security footage were denied. Twenty days later, authorities reported his phone’s signal had been traced to a green area in front of the hotel.
Multiple search efforts—both independent and coordinated with authorities—ensued. The family alleged obstacles during the investigation, including the resignation of a case agent, which delayed official progress.
Cause of Death and Family’s Anguish
Authorities determined Medina was fatally struck by a vehicle whose driver failed to stop, assist, or report the incident. His family has demanded justice, condemning the unidentified driver’s lack of accountability.
Medina’s mother shared a social media post after DNA testing confirmed the remains belonged to her son. She expressed grief over being unable to say goodbye and criticized the driver’s indifference.
“My son didn’t die instantly—he could have survived if the responsible person had stopped,” she wrote.
The discovery was announced on March 5, coinciding with the second anniversary of his disappearance. The family voiced frustration over the prolonged search, marked by anguish and unclear answers.
