Holbox, Quintana Roo — Fishermen and boat operators in Holbox have fallen victim to a series of thefts that directly affect their source of income in recent days. In total, six boats have been stripped of their engines, with each unit valued at over 200,000 pesos. After these thefts, the boats are abandoned adrift, generating significant losses for families who depend on their daily work.
This phenomenon has generated growing indignation among the island’s inhabitants, who demand that authorities take action. Those affected point out that the municipal president of Lázaro Cárdenas, Nivardo Mena, has ignored complaints and requests for help, which has increased discontent among fishermen and boat operators.
“The president does not attend to us, he does not respond to our calls or receive us at the Municipal Palace. He is not doing his job, and his disinterest only favors criminals. While he does nothing, the thieves continue operating with total freedom,” the affected individuals assert.
The thefts have already become a constant on the island, generating a sense of insecurity among residents. Holbox fishermen demand the presence of authorities such as the State Police, the Navy, or the National Guard to stop these types of criminal acts that have severely undermined the local economy.
Meanwhile, the community continues waiting for a response from the municipal president, who has not yet implemented effective measures to guarantee the security of maritime workers. Local authorities continue to offer no solution, keeping islanders in a situation of constant vulnerability.
