Chetumal, Quintana Roo — A sharp 23.7% drop in Belizean visitors to Chetumal reflects growing frustration over taxi scams, discrimination, and safety concerns, according to social media posts from Belizean travelers.
Official data from Belize shows citizens increasingly prefer traveling to Guatemala or flying instead of crossing into Mexico. On forums like “Informa T Corozal,” Belizeans describe abusive taxi fares and discriminatory treatment by local drivers.
“They know the taxi drivers are scamming them and always looking at them in a racist way; unfortunately some can’t speak Spanish and that’s when they abuse our Belizean neighbors the most,” one widely shared comment reads, highlighting how language barriers are exploited.
Safety concerns compound the problem. Belizeans point to Quintana Roo’s wave of violence, with comments noting “it must be because of the state’s insecurity” and direct appeals to state leadership: “Governor, she knows very well what happens in Chetumal.” For many visitors, crossing the northern border no longer represents leisure but a risk they’re unwilling to take.
This social backlash reveals a hospitality crisis that local authorities appear to ignore. As Chetumal’s businesses suffer from fewer customers, negative experiences shared on social media solidify Belizean reluctance to visit.
The lack of transportation regulation and absence of security strategies specifically protecting border tourists are pushing Belizean spending toward Melchor de Mencos, Guatemala, where travelers report more dignified treatment and calmer conditions.
