Bacalar’s Downtown Makeover: Keeping Its Magic

Bacalar — The downtown area of Bacalar requires a new image for tourism, but one that respects the guidelines of its “Pueblo Mágico” designation and provides spaces for local entrepreneurs and artisans, according to Brigido Rosado Carrillo, the fifth councilor of the municipal government.

The Urban Development Commission of the Bacalar City Council is preparing an initiative to regulate the image of the Remigio Rosado park, located in the city’s central square. The area is considered one of the most important views for tourism, as it is home to the “Bacalar” letter viewpoint as well as the Fuerte (Fort).

Councilor Rosado Carrillo stated that the proposed new image aims to create a more friendly and ecological vista for tourists while respecting the “Pueblo Mágico” guidelines, which emphasize the culture and roots of this growing tourist destination.

He explained that this regulation will also consider the adaptation of spaces for local entrepreneurs and artisans from the municipality, allowing them to bring their products to the tourists who visit the area.

However, the fifth councilor clarified that while they are discussing a regulation for the park, its fundamental appearance will not change, as they must comply with the guidelines to maintain its “Pueblo Mágico” designation.

“We are trying to land on a regulation that allows for a better park, one that is designed for the transit of people, but without affecting business owners and artisans, and giving benefits to both them and our visitors,” he elaborated.

Although this is currently just an idea being developed, Rosado Carrillo said it will be brought to a consensus with citizens. The initiative is expected to be ready for presentation to the Bacalar City Council in September.
