Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Local authorities are evaluating the implementation of regulations to control access to the municipality’s 22 public beaches, aiming to prevent visitors from bringing in solid waste. The measure is intended to address the ongoing issue of litter, particularly in beaches with Blue Flag certification.
Proposal Targets Waste Reduction
Fernando Muñoz, the eighth council member and president of the Municipal Committees for Environment and Tourism, explained that the proposal seeks to restrict beachgoers from entering with polystyrene coolers and other disposable items often abandoned on the sand.
“We are working to ensure that the beaches remain clean and safe for the families of Playa del Carmen,” Muñoz stated.
Existing Measures and Future Plans
Currently, beaches such as Playa 88 and Punta Esmeralda already have checkpoints where visitors’ belongings are inspected, with prohibited items confiscated to prevent pollution. Muñoz emphasized that these areas are not intended for alcohol consumption or intoxication, as broken glass bottles pose injury risks to beachgoers.
He also announced plans to collaborate with the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) to strengthen beach maintenance and ensure the safety of both residents and tourists.
The initiative reflects broader efforts to preserve Playa del Carmen’s coastal environment while maintaining its appeal to visitors.
